The fight against fat is going high-tech. To get an inside look at eating and exercise habits, scientists are developing wearable wireless sensors to monitor overweight and obese people as they go about their daily lives.

The experimental devices are designed to keep track of how many minutes they work out, how much food they consume and even whether they are at a fast-food joint when they should be in the park. The goal is to cut down on self-reported answers that often cover up what’s really happening.

In a lab in this Los Angeles suburb, two overweight teenagers help test the devices by taking turns sitting, standing, lying down, running on a treadmill and playing Wii. As music thumps in the background, wireless sensors on their chests record their heart rates, stress levels and amount of physical activity. The information is sent to a cell phone.

“I can’t feel my legs,” 15-year-old Amorette Castillo groans after her second treadmill run.

Traditional weight-loss interventions rely mainly on people’s memory of what they ate for dinner and how many minutes they worked out. But researchers have long known that method can be unreliable since people often forget details or lie.

The new devices are being designed in labs or created with off-the-shelf parts. Some similar instruments are already on the market, including a model that tracks calories burned by measuring motion, sweat and heat with armbands.

But the devices in development aim to be more sophisticated by featuring more precise electronics and sometimes even video cameras. Many emerging systems also strive to provide instant feedback and personalized treatment for wearers.

At the University of Southern California lab, the teens alternated between being sedentary and active as researchers resolved the technical bugs. Later this year, some will wear the body sensors at home on weekends. If they get too lazy, they will get pinged with a text message.

“We’ll be able to know real-time if they’re inactive, if they’re active,” said Donna Spruijt-Metz, a USC child obesity expert in charge of the project.

The devices are made possible by advances in technology such as accelerometers that can measure the duration and intensity of a workout. They also use Bluetooth-enabled cell phones that can take pictures of meals and send information back.

Will all this wizardry lead to a slimmer society? Scientists say there’s reason to hope. Getting an accurate picture of what people eat and how often they move around will help researchers develop personalized weight-loss advice.

Obesity is epidemic in the United States with two-thirds of adults either overweight or obese. It’s a major health concern for children and adolescents, who are at higher risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as they grow older.

A federally funded pilot project by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana is exploring whether people can lose more weight when tracked by technology.

Participants carry around Blackberry Curves to snap pictures of their meals and leftovers. They also wear a quarter-sized device on their shoe that counts the number of steps they take.

Counselors pore over the incoming data and give individually tailored health advice through e-mail or telephone. Every month, the participants get their weight checked, and their progress is compared against a separate group that receives only generic health tips.

The study involves just seven people, but researchers eventually hope to have 40.

“It’s highly personalized. You get feedback very quickly,” said Corby Martin, who heads Pennington’s Ingestive Behavior Laboratory.

By using technology to capture eating and exercise details, researchers hope to bypass self-reporting that can sometimes give an incomplete picture.

But some medical experts are concerned about ethical questions. Even if people agree to be tracked, researchers worry about intruding into the rest of their lives and the lives of those around them.

“As a researcher, I’m a professional voyeur, and I like to find out whatever I can about human subjects,” said William McCarthy, a professor of public health and psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. “But if I were a subject, I’d be concerned about the level of detail that’s being captured about my behavior from moment to moment.”

University of Pittsburgh engineer Mingui Sun has developed a necklace equipped with a video camera that records where a person goes and what he or she eats. Before a researcher sees the data, it’s filtered by a computer that blurs out other people’s faces.

The device is not smart enough to know whether the wearer ate a Big Mac or tofu. So a researcher inputs the food, and the computer calculates the portion size, calories and nutrients.

Sun’s lab workers are wearing the prototype, and he hopes to test it on real people by the middle of the year.

Another concern is whether people, particularly youngsters, will stick with it.

Fellow Pittsburgh researcher Dana Rofey recently completed a study of 20 overweight female preteens and teens who wore armbands tracking the number of steps taken and calories burned daily.

Researchers found the armbands were worn 75 percent of the time. Though the study did not include a comparison group, researchers were pleased with the high compliance rate.

On a recent weekday, Castillo and another study volunteer, 13-year-old Eric Carles, headed straight from school to the USC lab, where they strapped the sensors on and went through a sort of circuit training. The project manager timed them as a postdoctoral student recorded the session through a one-way mirror.

Through periods of sitting, standing and exercising, they chatted about scary movies and upcoming exams. Wearing the devices felt “weird” to Castillo initially, but she has since grown used to it.

Castillo admits she doesn’t exercise as she often as she would like and has a sweet tooth for chocolate. Carles, who plays after-school sports, confesses he eats a lot. The teens were willing to try anything to help them lose weight.

After enduring more than two hours of required physical activity, the two were allowed to do whatever they want. Researchers called it “free living,” and it offered a glimpse into the activities teens would choose when they test the sensors at home.

The two chose to play a music video game. With Castillo on drums and Carles on the guitar, they rocked out to Duran Duran and Bon Jovi as researchers looked on.

FC Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said on Monday that he is not expecting his side to make any signings during the winter transfer window.

Speaking on the eve of his side’s King’s Cup tie at home to Sevilla, Guardiola insisted he was not looking to bring in any new players, despite Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Villarreal.

Barca have lost midfielders Toure Yaya and Seydou Keita for a month on African Nations Cup duty, but that has not altered the coach’s plans.

“As far as I know, we don’t have anyone in mind. We are well covered in midfield and I have five more players in Barcelona Athletic (Barcelona’s B team) and we want to give them a chance,” said Guardiola in declarations that were reproduced on the club’s official website.

Guardiola preferred to discuss the rivals for a place in the last eight of the Cup, one of the six competitions that Barcelona won in 2009.

“I think they are a side that can compete with anyone. They were exceptionally good in the Champions League and have got one of the best squads in the league.”

“I worry about a lot of things in the Sevilla team. It is a very direct side, they use the spaces well and have two or three fantastic wingers,” said Guardiola.

The good news for the Barcelona coach is Leo Messi returns to his starting 11 for the game. Sevilla will be without strikers Luis Fabiano and Freddy Kanoute as well as midfielders Didier Zokora and Aldo Duscher in their trip to the Camp Nou Stadium.

Organisers of the Hong Kong Tennis Classic were informed on Christmas Eve that Marat Safin was unable to take his place for Team Russia in the upcoming tournament. His agent said that Safin has been suffering from a wrist injury - which almost prevented him from playing in his farewell event in Paris - and the injury had still not healed properly. “Marat cannot aggravate it further by playing at this level.”

Safin himself said,” I am really sorry I cannot play Hong Kong, I was very much looking forward to the event. I also apologise to my fans for not being able to take part, and hopefully I can play at a future tournament.”

Tournament Director, Terry Catton regretted his withdrawal but announced that Safin’s replacement is former World No. 1 Yevgeny Kafelnikov, now playing on the ATP Champions Tour. The Russian champion retired in 2003, and soon after turned his hand to professional poker, a game he also excelled at. His recent return to the Champions Tour earned him instant recognition, and he is now one of the Tours’ top competitors. Catton said “Yevgeny has won two Grand Slam Singles titles and four Grand Slam Doubles titles, he is a former No. 1 and will be a first class replacement for Marat.”

The Hong Kong Tennis Classic takes place from January 6th - 9th 2010, and tickets and VIP Boxes for the annual tournament have been hot items in the lead up to Christmas. Tickets can still be bought at URBTIX outlets and are priced from HK$330 to HK$780.

Chicago Bulls general manager Gar Forman made an ambiguous response Tuesday night to rumors about the status of coach Vinny Del Negro.

An internet report said late Sunday that the Bulls had decided to fire Del Negro as soon as they find a suitable replacement.

“Vinny is our coach, our goal is to get better each and every day,” Forman said in a meeting with media prior to the Bulls-Indiana Pacers game.

Forman added that the team “are not going to talk about specific articles or rumors that may cross the Internet or the newspaper or TV.”

“There is a lot of season left this year,” Forman said. “Today we are half a game out of the playoffs with 50-odd games left to play. We like our young core. That doesn’t mean we aren’t exploring options to make our team better.”

The Bulls are 11-17, and pressure on Del Negro grew strongest when the Bulls lost to Sacramento last week after leading by 35 points in the third quarter. Since then, the Bulls have lost at New York and beat New Orleans at home Saturday.

Forman also admitted that there have been things that have gone against the team.

“Up to this point in our season, we have had a number of injuries to our key guys, and have had a very difficult schedule up to this point of the season,” said Forman.

Amare Stoudemire scored 26 points, Jared Dudley matched his career best with 19 and the Phoenix Suns sent the Los Angeles Lakers to their second loss in three games with a surprising 118-103 rout on Monday night. Kobe Bryant scored 34 for the Lakers but sat out the final 7:50 when the game was deemed out of reach by coach Phil Jackson. Steve Nash had 16 points and 13 assists and the Suns’ reserves outscored their Los Angeles counterparts 52-31. Phoenix led by as many as 12 in the second quarter, 19 in the third and 22 in the fourth to improve to 12-2 at home. The Lakers were without Ron Artest for the second game in a row. He sustained a concussion and an injured elbow in a fall at his house on Christmas Day. The margin matched the 15-point victory Cleveland had over the Lakers in Los Angeles three games ago. Only a late spurt kept it from being the most one-sided loss of the season for the reigning NBA champs. Los Angeles’ lone win in the last three came in double overtime two nights ago in Sacramento. Channing Frye had 14 points and a season-high 11 rebounds for the Suns, who fought the much bigger Lakers to a 43-43 standoff on the boards. The Lakers, playing the third of four games in five days, trailed virtually all night. Leading 56-50 at the half, Phoenix used a 17-4 outburst to go up 87-68 on the first of Dudley’s three 3-pointers without a miss. Nash and Jason Richardson also had 3s in the run, while Stoudemire scored four, including a driving dunk. Bryant scored nine straight Lakers points, but his driving layup at third-quarter buzzer was blocked by Robin Lopez, and the Suns led 89-77 entering the fourth. Dudley and Goran Dragic sank consecutive 3s and Phoenix led 108-89 with 6:51. By then, Bryant had sat down for good. Coach Alvin Gentry, taking no chances, reinserted Nash and Stoudemire in the lineup with 4:54 left and Phoenix leading 110-94. Stoudemire had a three-point play and Nash made a 3-pointer to give the Suns a 116-94 lead with 3:27 left. A 12-0 run at the end of the first quarter and start of the second put Phoenix ahead 32-23 on Leandro Barbosa’s two free throws with 10:53 left in the half. Two more at the line by Barbosa gave the Suns their biggest lead of the first half at 39-27 with 8:13 to go. Bryant’s 3-pointer, followed by his 15-footer cut it to 48-45 with 2:09 left in the half. Stoudemire scored the next six for the Suns, and after Bryant’s driving layup with 9.5 seconds left made it 54-51, Nash sank two free throws with 2.7 remaining to put the Suns up 56-51 at the break. NOTES: Jackson said he is hopeful Artest will rejoin the team against Golden State Tuesday in Los Angeles. … The Suns lost to the Lakers in Los Angeles by 19 and 21 points. Phoenix was in the second of back-to-back games in both contests. … Phoenix has a victory over the teams with the three best records in the league — the Lakers, Boston and Orlando.

FIFA President Joseph Blatter has reiterated the world soccer body’s commitment to a better future for every child through access to education, local media reported Saturday.

In his New Year message to football fans, Blatter said the soccer governing body’s mission was not only to develop football.

“It is our duty to make a positive contribution to the creation of a better future,” he said.

According to him, FIFA’s 1GOAL Education for All campaign was to use football as a platform to improve access to education and health care for children and the young around the world.

The world soccer chief said the concept of education for every child could be taken for granted in many parts of the world, but the reality sometimes is very different.

He said the eyes of the world would be turned to Africa next year when South Africa would host the first World Cup in the continent. Blatter said football could be used to build bridges between people and contribute positively to society by inculcating values such as solidarity, respect and fair play.

He said FIFA established Football for Hope four years ago as the cornerstone of its corporate social responsibility to support, advise and strengthen sustainable social and human development programs in the areas of health, children’s rights, education, anti-discrimination and social integration.

He described the outgoing year as a successful and exciting football year that featured top-class FIFA competitions. He said the football family stood together and cooperated to stage the competitions.

Africa hosted three of FIFA’s competitions in 2009.

The competitions are the FIFA Confederations Cup, which was held in South Africa in July, the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt in September and the Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria in October/November.

“One of the final, and most spectacular, events in the annual FIFA calendar is the FIFA World Player Gala and once again, we honored the best male and female players, who are the key element and most important figures in our game,” Blatter said.

The FIFA chief added that he was looking forward to sharing another memorable 12 months with all soccer fans in the world in 2010.

The Brazilian women’s national soccer team won the City of Sao Paulo International Soccer Tournament on Sunday after beating Mexico 5-2 to finish thefour-team tournament undefeated.

Marta, the world’s reigning and three year consecutive FIFA MVP, led Brazil to victory by scoring three goals in Sunday’s final.

However, Brazil was put against the wall when Mexico scored the game’s first goal in the 11th minute when Dinora caught the defense off guard, scoring on a shot from long distance.

Brazil quickly tied the match in the 22nd minute when Aline tapped in a cross. The team took a 2-1 lead into halftime when Marta scored in the 34th minute.

Mexico began the second half with an all out offensive assault.Within the first two minutes of the second half, the Mexicans ricocheted two balls off Brazil’s goalpost.

But Mexico’s fullback Alina did not help the team’s cause, scoring back-to-back goals into her own net. The first came when Erika’s shot was deflected by Mexico’s goalie, bouncing off the face of Alina and into Mexico’s goal. The second came minutes later when Marta dribbled through the defense. Alina was able to get a foot on Marta’s ball, but ended up knocking it into her own goal.

Mexico was able to score their second goal of the match in the 70th minute. Nayeli took a shot on goal that deflected off Brazil defender, Ester, and found its way into Brazil’s nets.

Minutes later, Christiane broke past the defense and unselfishly gave a clean assist to a wide open Marta, who then pounded the ball with her left foot into the left side of Mexico’s goal.

“We have to thank the fans for coming out in large numbers and supporting us. Today’s victory is an early Christmas present to them,” said Ester.

“No one used to care about women’s soccer in Brazil. However, today’s game had a sold out crowd. I am very happy. We are thrilled with the tournament title and pleased with our current level of play,” added the team’s head coach, Kleiton Lima.

Marta, who ended the tournament as the leading scorer with nine goals, and Christiane did not have much time to celebrate their latest achievement. Both players boarded a helicopter that took them to the airport with Zurich, Switzerland as their destination. Both athletes are in the running to be named the 2009’s best female soccer player in FIFA’s annual award ceremony that will be held on Monday.

In the consolation game, China beat Chile 2-0. China’s midfielder Ma Xiaoxu scored both of her team’s goals, leading to the team’s bronze medal.

Houston Rockets’ Chinese center Yao Ming said he will focus mainly on the running of Shanghai Sharks back in China and would probably return to NBA by next season.

Yao came back to Shanghai on Thursday night, mainly to fulfill his duty as the sole shareholder of Shanghai Sharks, the name of which had been changed to Shanghai Sharks-Maxxis Tires basketball team as Maxxis Tires signed with Yao’s management team to be the team’s title sponsor on Friday morning.

“I used to be a player of Shanghai Sharks, and now I become the boss of the team. But no matter how the identity changes, I hope that Shanghai sharks would soon return to glory and take on new look for fans in Shanghai and all over China,” said Yao on the signing ceremony.

The Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league will kick off on Saturday with its opener between Zhejiang Guangsha and Shanghai Sharks. According to Shanghai Sharks spokesman Zhang Chi, about 3,000 tickets of the opening game have been sold out.

Yao would also appear at the opener Saturday night at Yuanshen Stadium of Pudong district, Shanghai.

Speaking of the time to return to the NBA, Yao said he might be completely recovered by next season, but so far he didn’t know exactly what day it would start as the game schedule had not come out yet.

Earlier this year Yao became the sole owner of the financially troubled domestic team, which has struggled to make the playoffs since he left. Yao started playing for the Sharks as a teenager, leading them to their only CBA title before he left for the NBA in 2002.
